The crunchy leaves, cosy evenings, beautiful colours, warm drinks and that fresh feeling in the air.

So I thought I’d put together some ideas for how to enjoy autumn as a Muslim woman and really embrace the season without getting caught up in the Halloween side of things.

As Muslims, we might not celebrate everything associated with autumn, but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the season itself and all the beautiful things Allah has created within it.

So grab yourself a cosy drink, and let’s get into the autumn mood!

1. Go for a Walk Through the Crunchy Autumn Leaves

I’m going to really set the scene for you here.

Put your boots on and head outside on a lovely, crisp autumn day. Find yourself a park, woodland or even just a street with plenty of trees and walk through those crunchy autumn leaves.

And yes, the crunchy part is important.

Look around at how nature is changing. The leaves that were green throughout the summer have transformed into beautiful shades of yellow, orange, brown, red and burgundy.

MashaAllah, autumn really is a beautiful season.

It’s also that lovely time of year when the air is fresh without necessarily being freezing cold like it is in winter.

Unless it’s raining.

Then everything is just soggy.

But on one of those lovely dry autumn days, get outside, breathe in the fresh air, admire the colours and enjoy the simple pleasure of deliberately stepping on every crunchy leaf you can find.

2. Get an Autumn Colouring Book

If you’re like me and still enjoy colouring, get yourself an autumn-themed adult colouring book.

I love the idea of sitting somewhere cosy with some felt-tip pens in all those gorgeous autumn colours — browns, oranges, yellows and burgundies — and colouring pumpkins, leaves and other autumn scenes.

It’s relaxing, it’s inexpensive and it’s another little way of getting yourself into the autumn mood.

Put your phone away, make yourself a hot drink and spend an hour colouring.

Who said colouring was only for children?

3. Add Some Autumn Décor to Your Home

I mean… we love shopping anyway, don’t we?

Autumn gives us an excuse to have a little browse for some cosy seasonal home décor.

You definitely don’t need to go overboard or start overconsuming just because it’s a new season. A few inexpensive pieces can completely change the atmosphere of a room.

Look out for things such as autumn mugs, candles, fairy lights, cushions or simple decorations featuring leaves and warm autumn colours.

I found a lovely autumn mug and an autumn spice candle in Home Bargains, and little things like that can make your home feel so much cosier.

As Muslims, autumn shopping can sometimes be a little tricky because the shops are also filled with Halloween decorations — skeletons, ghosts and all sorts of spooky things that we might prefer to avoid.

Alhamdulillah, because the whole cosy autumn aesthetic has become so popular, it’s much easier nowadays to find decorations that are simply about autumn rather than Halloween.

4. Visit a Pumpkin Patch or Apple Orchard

This is one of those things I’ve seen approximately a million times on social media but haven’t really done myself.

Visit a pumpkin patch!

Do people actually enjoy pumpkin patches, or are we all just going there for Instagram?

Because whenever I see them, they look incredibly muddy.

Part of me thinks I could save myself the journey and just pop down to Aldi and grab a pumpkin.

But it does look like a lovely autumn day out, particularly if you’re going with family or friends.

You could also see whether there are any pick-your-own apple orchards or farms near you. Spend a few hours outside, pick some seasonal produce and then take it home for the next activity…

5. Do Some Autumn Baking

Now we’re talking.

One of the best things about autumn has to be the food.

Apple crumble with hot custard on a cold autumn evening?

Amazing.

You could also experiment with pumpkin recipes, cakes, pies, soups and other warming seasonal dishes.

I’ve tried cooking with fresh pumpkin before, although nobody warns you how much effort is involved in actually chopping and peeling the thing.

It’s practically a workout.

You could make an afternoon of it and experiment with some new autumn recipes.

And why not make extra and share it?

Bake an extra cake and take some to your neighbour. Share something with friends or family. Food is such a lovely way of connecting with the people around us and creating that sense of community.

Honestly, turn up at your neighbour’s house with homemade cake and they’re going to love you.

6. Have a Cosy Autumn Movie Night

I love a good seasonal movie.

You know the type.

Someone leaves their busy city job, moves to a tiny picturesque town, meets somebody at an apple orchard and suddenly discovers the true meaning of life.

Love in an Orchard, probably.

I made that title up, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it exists.

Sometimes you just want a wholesome, cosy film that doesn’t require too much brainpower and lets you switch off from everything going on in your life.

So get your blanket, make yourself a hot drink, find an autumn-themed movie that you’re comfortable watching and enjoy a cosy evening at home.

7. Bring Out Your Autumn Wardrobe

One of my favourite things about a new season is changing over my wardrobe.

It’s time to bring out the autumn clothes.

Think long dresses, cosy fabrics, cardigans, jumpers, boots and all those beautiful autumn colours.

Burgundy, chocolate brown, burnt orange, deep green…

Even if you don’t buy anything new, going through your wardrobe and rediscovering clothes you haven’t worn since last autumn can make it feel like you have a whole new selection.

Put your summer pieces away, pull out your warmer clothes and embrace the cosy autumn wardrobe.

8. Make Some Cosy Autumn Drinks

What drink immediately comes to mind when you think about autumn?

Pumpkin spice latte.

Obviously.

I’ve bought a pumpkin spice latte mix before, and I’m still not entirely convinced whether I actually like it or whether we’ve all collectively decided we’re supposed to like pumpkin spice because it’s autumn.

But don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!

You don’t need to buy an expensive coffee-shop version either. Experiment at home with your own autumn-inspired drinks.

And if pumpkin spice isn’t your thing, you really can’t go wrong with a good hot chocolate.

A cosy blanket, a book and a massive mug of hot chocolate on an autumn evening?

Yes, please.

9. Try Some Autumn Crafts

If colouring isn’t your thing, try getting creative in another way.

Autumn is perfect for crafts because nature basically provides the supplies for free.

One thing I enjoy doing with my children is collecting fallen autumn leaves and using them to create pictures and crafts.

You could also make autumn wreaths, decorate jars, create leaf prints, paint autumn scenes or try any number of seasonal craft projects.

Have a look online for inspiration and choose something that appeals to you.

It doesn’t need to look Pinterest-perfect.

The whole point is to slow down, do something creative and enjoy yourself.

10. Create an Autumn Reading List

Finally, autumn is the perfect time to get cosy with a good book.

Find yourself something that fits the season — something comforting, inspiring or simply a story that you can completely lose yourself in.

Your autumn reading list could include Islamic literature, fiction, non-fiction, biographies, self-development books or anything else you enjoy.

You could even search for autumn reading recommendations and create yourself a little seasonal reading list.

Then all that’s left to do is find your cosy corner, grab a blanket and make one of those hot chocolates we talked about earlier.

Bonus points if it’s raining outside.

Actually, if you’re in the UK, the rain probably isn’t going to be difficult to arrange.

Enjoy the Season Without Losing Sight of Your Values

Enjoying autumn doesn’t have to mean taking part in every celebration associated with the season.

As Muslim women, we can enjoy the beautiful parts of autumn while choosing activities that fit comfortably with our own beliefs and values.

Appreciate the changing colours of nature. Go for walks. Bake something delicious. Spend time with your family. Read. Create. Make your home cosy. Share food with your neighbours.

Sometimes enjoying the seasons is simply another form of self-care. It gives us little things to look forward to and reminds us to appreciate the beauty in everyday life.

And autumn really is beautiful, mashaAllah.

So get those boots on, find yourself the crunchiest pile of leaves possible and enjoy it.

Have a lovely, lovely autumn season. 🍂🍁

There is something so lovely about autumn.
